This You Tube video skit is put together by the Skit Guys. They focus on the promise that many of us make. “This year will be different; I’ll keep my New Years resolutions this year (unlike in previous years).” We believe that we can all relate to the things the Skit Guys and others bring out in this timely video. We resolve to do “better.” But do we?
So, what is it with you? Is it weigh loss, or weight gain? Are you looking to be better about being on time? Or it may be that you need to be more patient with a spouse who is never on time. Is it about spending habits, or addiction problems? Or do you get too irritated at your spouse and/or children? The list of possibilities goes on and on. Whatever it is, as it’s pointed out, “Goals have to be set.”
But as they point out in the skit, there is also a spiritual component here. It’s not a matter of just mentally “muscling up” and trying to make ourselves “do thing better.” Trying to apply our will power alone rarely works. So why not try something different?
This Year Will Be Different?
If you find yourself in this place where you know you need to “do better” in some area of your life, and you want this year to be different… look to God. Most importantly, lean into Him—not your own ways of approaching New Years resolutions.
To help you, here is a good prayer starter to start you on your way. It is stated by David and is found in Psalm 139:23-24. In humility and sincerity, pray:
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.“
After praying that prayer don’t forget to listen. Listen and do what God directs you to do. And then do it! He will most likely start the changes in your life with YOU. That can be a scary thing. But it’s the best place to start. From that position we will be stronger to make other changes with God’s help. He will help us as we lean into Him.
