Praying for Your Beloved Unbelieving Spouse

Praying spouse - Morguefile000640756889When you live with an unbelieving spouse, your heart is torn in so many directions. You love your God and you love your spouse, but your spouse doesn’t love your God. It grieves your heart so deeply.

There are many different dynamics that the Believer has to learn to maneuver through and live with in order to make your marriage work. Your ultimate goal in your married life is to live with him or her in such a way that your spouse will fall in love with God as you do.

You strive to live the gospel with and without words. Some spouses aren’t given the freedom by him or her to use words. Clearly, the best thing you can do is to pray for him or her —both for his or her sake, but also for your own.

Just Sit

In living with an unbelieving spouse, there are times when it’s important to:

“Just sit in God’s presence to listen, especially when we’re at a loss for words. Sometimes we don’t know what to pray, especially in our mismatched marriages or situations so bewildering we can’t fathom what to ask. But even to sit in silence before God in those times and allow the Holy Spirit to pray for us is a sacrifice of prayer for ultimately we are called to sacrifice our will for the greater one of God. We come before God with our own brokenness to offer, trusting that He is the only true source of our healing and hope.” (Dineen A. Miller, from article, The Sacrifice of Prayer)

To help you as you reach out for hope and sometimes healing and how to best pray for  your spouse, we came several “tools” that you may want to use.

The first is a prayer page that could guide you through the scriptures as you pray for your spouse. It comes from the “Prayer Closet Ministries” which transforms lives through intercessory prayers and fasting.

  1. Thank you for offering to pray for us. Please help me pray that my husband, Martin will love me as Christ loved the church and he will come to know God’s love and all He has for him. Thank you.

  2. I receive this prayer in my spirit. Please help me pray that Adam will love me like Christ loved the church and that Adam will see the AGAPE love that I have for him. God Bless You!

  3. Please pray for my husband Jayson. He has currently turned his back on the Lord and almost left his family. Praise God he chose to stay and work on the marriage, but he currently is denying Christ. We have a messy past of him having many affairs and even though I committed to stay with him and forgave him I don’t believe he has ever forgiven himself. I also went through the past 4 years with a wall around my heart to protect myself from being hurt. Instead I hurt my husband and separated myself from God.

I have since repented of that and I know God has forgiven me, but not sure my husband has. He says he isn’t sure he can let me back into his heart. My heart is broken for him that he refuses to let God in his life. He is also in the military and is in and out of the home and is receiving very ungodly counsel. I have been begging for God to bring my husband back to Him and to restore my marriage completely. Thank you! I will pray this prayer from Ephesians every single day..

    1. You are welcome Frances. May God bless you and your marriage as you unite with God in prayer for your husband. “May the Lord direct your heart into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.” (2 Thessalonians 3:5)

  4. Please pray for my unbelieving husband. Our marriage is hanging by a thread. I know Jesus can change his heart and restore us.

  5. Please pray for my husband Mike, who has left me and our six children. We are desperately seeking God’s will.

  6. I would really appreciate it if you could pray for my wife Rina Julian (an unbeliever). It’s like our marriage is deteriorating simply because Christ isn’t in her life. I will pray the prayer which you taught me, thank you so much. God bless you.

  7. Please pray for me and my husband. We have been married 32 years this June. My husband and I are unequally yoked in many ways. He professes to have been saved but he doesn’t show any regards for having agreement within our relationship. He does whatever he wants with no regards for how his choices affect me as his wife or his son. Please pray and be in agreement God will soften his heart and help him return back to Christ Jesus. Amen and amen.

  8. I need all your prayers for my unbelieving husband who is afraid of the church seeing it as brainwashing and not wanting me to attend church…please pray for him…I will pray your one sentence prayer all day so that he may be touched by the Lord. I do not want to sin and not fellowship, so my marriage is at great risk…
I thank you for being there 🙏🙏🙏🙏
